Converting Running Pace (min/km) to km/h

A pace of 5 minutes per kilometer equals

12 km/h

Pace and Speed: an Inverse Relationship

In running, one's pace is often expressed as 'minutes per kilometer' rather than as a speed in km/h. Unlike the other conversions on this page, the quantity here is the inverse of a speed: a lower pace (e.g. 4 min/km) corresponds to a higher speed, while a higher pace (e.g. 7 min/km) corresponds to a lower speed. The conversion therefore requires a division, not a simple multiplication.

The Conversion Formula

To convert pace (in minutes per km) to speed (km/h), divide 60 by the pace value:

km/h = 60 ÷ (minutes per km)

To convert from speed to pace, perform the inverse operation, again dividing 60 by the value (the formula is the same, applied in reverse):

minutes per km = 60 ÷ (km/h)

Practical Examples

  • 4 min/km pace = 60 ÷ 4 = 15 km/h (fast pace, trained athlete)
  • 5 min/km pace = 60 ÷ 5 = 12 km/h (brisk pace)
  • 6 min/km pace = 60 ÷ 6 = 10 km/h (moderate pace, common for beginners)
  • 7 min/km pace = 60 ÷ 7 ≈ 8.57 km/h (light jogging pace)

When This Conversion Is Needed

This conversion is essential for runners using apps or GPS watches that display pace in minutes per kilometer, but who want to compare their pace with treadmill speed at the gym (usually set in km/h), or who want to calculate their expected finish time for a race knowing their average pace.
